A village made up of hamlets in a long valley to the south-east of Castellane, Peyroules boasts a low-key medieval heritage and unspoilt starlit skies.
History & heritage
Formed from the merger of several hamlets (La Rivière, La Bâtie, Le Mousteiret, La Foux), Peyroules originally comprised a hilltop village perched at an altitude of over 1,200 metres around a castle, now in ruins; from the 19th century onwards, the inhabitants moved down into the valley. The listed Romanesque chapel of Saint-Pons (11th century) is the jewel in the crown.
Geography & setting
About fifteen kilometres south-east of Castellane, in a long valley nestled between the hills, Peyroules has been awarded the ‘Village étoilé’ designation for the clarity of its night sky.
