History & heritage
The village’s name, ‘Podium Michaelis’, means ‘the high place of Michael’ and first appears around 1180. Built on terraces and crowned by the Chapel of Saint Elzéar, Puimichel has been home since the 1980s to an observatory equipped with one of the largest amateur telescopes in Europe, featuring a mirror one metre in diameter.
