A historic crossroads in the Asse Valley, Barrême has lent its name to a geological period and preserves the memory of the Route Napoléon and the Train des Pignes.
History & heritage
Rich in fossils, Barrême gave its name to the ‘Barremian’, a geological stage of the Cretaceous period; its small station on the Train des Pignes line houses a geological museum. A stop on the Route Napoléon, the village welcomed the Emperor on the night of 3–4 March 1815, on his return from Elba.

Situated at the confluence of the Asse rivers (from Blieux, Clumanc and Moriez), Barrême is a hub of valleys and roads linking Digne, Castellane and the Verdon, in the heart of the Haute-Provence Geopark.
